Size doesn’t matter when it comes to the bonds we share with our pets. All PetsWay locations (except Nixa) carry a selection of small animals: mice, rats, bunnies, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, and ferrets. In addition, some of our stores offer other live pets, like sugar gliders, hedgehogs, and chinchillas. If you’re interested in adding one of these minuscule mammals to your family, contact your nearest PetsWay location to discover which pets are currently available.
Our associates can help you determine which live pets best suit your lifestyle and preferences. Although they’re all small and adorable, these animals have different temperaments, habits, and requirements. Take some time to explore your options so that you can find the best pet for your family.
Did you know that domestic mice have been kept as pets for centuries? Most mice are curious, fun-loving animals that make great pets for children and adults alike. They have excellent hearing (ultrasonic, in fact) and an exemplary sense of smell, and they typically live between one and three years. Female mice are preferred, because males may fight; if you select a male mouse, consider letting him live alone. Although very social and friendly, mice are nocturnal and thus most active during the evening and night. Pet mice are available at all PetsWay locations.
Rats are extremely intelligent, curious, and fun animals. Very social pets, they often enjoy napping in the laps of their human friends or riding on their shoulders, and they like to be kept with other rats. Although they’re relatively easy to care for, they do require a fair amount of attention and exercise. They are nocturnal, and they typically live around two to three years. Males (known as bucks) tend to be slightly larger and lazier, while females (known as does) are a bit more active and playful. Pet rats are available at all PetsWay locations.
No one can resist the big ears, wiggly nose, and fluffy tail of a rabbit. Bunnies are affectionate and adorable pets that enjoy munching on fresh veggies daily. They’re also quite intelligent and respond well to basic training. For example, did you know that a pet rabbit can be trained to use a litter box and come when called? Rabbits require more space to roam than the other live pets on this list, and they can live up to ten years or more. If you’re ready for the commitment, they make excellent companions. Pet rabbits are available at all PetsWay locations.
Despite their name, guinea pigs do not hail from New Guinea! These docile members of the rodent family are actually native to South America and make exceptional pets. They are very social and typically happiest if paired with other guinea pigs from a young age. Although typically quiet, guinea pigs make a loud and distinctive noise (known as “wheeking”) when excited or wanting attention. They’re known to squeak when their favorite humans enter the room. Be prepared to care for a moderately long-term pet, however, because guinea pigs live for five to seven years on average. Pet guinea pigs are available at all PetsWay locations.
Adorably small and fluffy, hamsters are nocturnal members of the rodent family. Their name comes from the German word “hamster, which means “hoard” – and that is precisely what they do with extra food! Hamsters enjoy sleeping the day away but are very active at night, making them excellent pets for night owls. To ensure that your hamster gets enough exercise, be sure to purchase a hamster wheel for his or her cage. Pet hamsters are available at all PetsWay locations.
Small rodents with long, furry tails, gerbils are most active during the day – making them a great choice for families with children. They are curious animals that enjoy exploring and digging, which can be fun to watch. Like hamsters, they are small but lively and don’t require too much space. They typically live about three years, and they enjoy socializing with other gerbils. Pet gerbils are available at all PetsWay locations.
With their lithe bodies and curious, playful personalities, ferrets are adored by many families. They are known to make toys out of everyday objects, like bags and socks, and they may get into mischief if not properly trained. Although older children can be taught to properly handle ferrets, these creatures don’t do well with young children. They’re rewarding pets, but they do require a time commitment: Ferrets can live for 10 years or more. Pet ferrets are available at all PetsWay locations.
A popular exotic pet due to their small size and unusual appearance, sugar gliders are sociable pets that make great companions. They’re named for their diet, which includes many sugary foods like fruit and nectar, and their ability to glide through the air. Originally hailing from Australia, Indonesia, and New Guinea, sugar gliders live in tree tops in the wild. With regular human interaction and bonding, sugar gliders can be quite tame and cuddly. They live for 12 to 15 years and require a relatively large cage with horizontal bars to allow for climbing. Native sugar gliders (raised in America) are carried at select Petsway locations when available. For more information regarding availability, contact your nearest location.
Active and playful animals, chinchillas are native to the Andes Mountains in South America. Due to their energetic nature, they require large, multi-level cages. Most chinchillas are nocturnal, but some are most active at dawn or dusk. They enjoy playing with toys and their human companions, and they need items to chew on in order to keep their teeth in good condition. Chinchillas grow around 10 to 14 inches long, and they typically live between 15 and 20 years. Pet chinchillas are carried at select PetsWay locations when available. For more information regarding availability, contact your nearest location.
Hedgehogs are unique, docile pets with prickly spines like porcupines. Most domesticated hedgehogs come from North Africa, and they make terrific companions with proper care and handling. They will curl up into a ball if they feel threatened, and they enjoy a nocturnal lifestyle. Hedgehogs produce very little dander, so they’re a good option for people with pet dander allergies. Native hedgehogs (raised in America) are carried at select PetsWay locations when available. For more information regarding availability, contact your nearest location.
Although all of these pets are relatively small in size and make great companions, they have distinct personalities and very different needs when it comes to maintenance and interaction. Call or stop by your nearest PetsWay location to learn more about the live pets we have available.
